Under 24 V.S.A. App. ch. 3 § 371, property owners and managers in the jurisdiction generally work through the Department of Permitting and Inspections as the single point of contact for building, zoning, plumbing, and electrical permits. Compliant operators typically ensure their rental housing units are available for inspection and meet the Minimum Housing Code, since the department holds explicit authority to inspect rental units and enforce violations. Staying current with permit requirements and responding promptly to any notices of violation are practices associated with maintaining compliance under this provision.

Section 371 of 24 V.S.A. App. ch. 3 establishes that the Department of Permitting and Inspections has the authority to inspect rental housing units for compliance with the Minimum Housing Code and other applicable housing codes. Tenants who believe their unit may not meet these standards have a general path of filing a complaint with the Department of Permitting and Inspections, which is empowered to notice and enforce violations. Tenant-rights organizations in Vermont can also help renters understand what options may be available when housing code concerns arise.
