Cal. Civ. Code § 70
Repairs and cleanliness
Operative Text
§ 70. Repairs and cleanliness. Every transient dwelling shall be maintained in conformity with the provisions of section one hundred seventy-four.
Under N.Y. Mult. Resid. Law § 70, every transient dwelling—such as a hotel, rooming house, or similar short-term residential facility—must be kept in compliance with the standards set out in section 174 of the same law. Section 174 establishes baseline requirements for the physical upkeep and cleanliness of such buildings. This provision creates a continuing obligation tied directly to those standards, meaning the duty to maintain the property does not expire or reset.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Operators of transient dwellings subject to N.Y. Mult. Resid. Law § 70 generally keep their properties in ongoing conformity with the repair and cleanliness standards referenced in section 174, rather than treating compliance as a one-time event. Compliant operators typically conduct regular inspections, address maintenance deficiencies promptly, and document their upkeep efforts. Familiarity with the specific requirements of section 174 is central to meeting the obligations imposed by § 70.

N.Y. Mult. Resid. Law § 70 establishes that residents of transient dwellings have the benefit of maintenance and cleanliness standards tied to section 174 of the same law. If conditions in a transient dwelling appear to fall short of those standards, tenants or occupants may consider documenting the conditions, raising the violation with building management, or filing a complaint with the local housing or building code enforcement agency. Tenant-rights organizations familiar with New York's Multiple Residence Law can help occupants understand what remedies or enforcement paths may be available under § 70.
