Mississippi Code § 43-33-16 makes it a misdemeanor to use false statements, concealment of information, impersonation, or any other fraudulent method to obtain public housing, reduce public housing rent, or secure a rent subsidy one is not entitled to receive. The prohibition extends to anyone who knowingly helps another person commit such fraud. The law also requires that notice of this rule appear on public housing application forms and be posted in the offices where applications are accepted.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Housing authorities and operators of publicly funded housing covered under § 43-33-16 generally ensure that application forms carry the required statutory notice and that the same notice is visibly displayed in application offices. Compliant operators typically maintain procedures to verify applicant information and flag discrepancies that could indicate false statements or undisclosed information. Keeping documentation of these practices supports ongoing compliance with the provision's notice and integrity requirements.

Under § 43-33-16, applicants and residents of public housing in Mississippi have a clear legal obligation to provide accurate information on applications and to disclose material facts that affect eligibility or rental charges. Submitting false information or omitting required details can result in a misdemeanor conviction, not merely a loss of housing benefits. Tenants who have questions about what information must be disclosed, or who believe they were wrongly accused of a violation, may wish to consult a tenant-rights organization or legal aid provider familiar with Mississippi public housing law.
