Mich. Comp. Laws § § 37.2803
Sec. 803.

This act shall not be construed to diminish the right of a person to direct or immediate legal or equitable remedies in the courts of the state.

Plain English

Michigan Civil Rights Act § 37.2803 makes clear that the protections and procedures established elsewhere in MCL § 37.2101 et seq. do not replace or reduce any legal or equitable remedies that a person might otherwise pursue in state court. In other words, the existence of the Act's own enforcement mechanisms does not foreclose a separate or simultaneous court action. The provision preserves the full range of judicial options that existed independently of the Act.

For Property Managers

Under MCL § 37.2101 et seq. § 37.2803, property owners and managers should be aware that compliance obligations under the Michigan Civil Rights Act do not limit the courts' authority to grant relief through independent legal or equitable actions. A compliant operator generally understands that aggrieved parties may seek remedies both through the Act's administrative channels and through direct court proceedings. Awareness of this dual-track exposure is a standard part of understanding fair housing obligations in Michigan.

For Tenants

Section 37.2803 of MCL § 37.2101 et seq. affirms that tenants retain the right to pursue direct legal or equitable remedies in Michigan state courts, separate from any administrative process the Act provides. This means that filing a complaint through an administrative channel is not necessarily the only avenue available when a civil rights concern arises in a housing context. Tenants exploring their options may wish to consult a tenant-rights organization or legal aid office to understand the full range of judicial and administrative paths that may be available.
