Cal. Civ. Code § 6-848.1
Md. Code Ann., Environment Art. Title 6, Subtitle 8 — Lead Poisoning Prevention Program
Operative Text
(a) In this section, “retailer” means any person who sells paint or paint supplies to a consumer. (b) A retailer shall display a poster developed and provided by the Department under subsection (c) of this section: (1) Within an area in which paint or paint supplies are sold or displayed; or (2) At each register or check-out aisle. (c) The Department shall develop and provide a poster to retailers that includes the following information: (1) The dangers and hazards of lead poisoning; and (2) A phone number that consumers can call for assistance in lead risk reduction and safe renovation practices.
Under Md. Code Ann., Env. §§ 6-801 to 6-852 § 6-848.1, Maryland law requires paint retailers to display a state-developed poster wherever paint or paint supplies are sold or at each checkout area. The poster must communicate the dangers of lead poisoning and provide a phone number consumers can call for guidance on lead risk reduction and safe renovation practices. This rule is aimed at ensuring that anyone purchasing paint-related products has access to basic lead-safety information at the point of sale.

Property owners and managers who purchase paint or supplies for renovation work may encounter the poster required by Md. Code Ann., Env. §§ 6-801 to 6-852 § 6-848.1 at retail locations. Compliant retailers generally display this state-issued poster in the paint section or at checkout, making lead-hazard information and a helpline number readily visible. Landlords undertaking renovation or repainting projects can use the contact information on that poster as a starting point for understanding safe renovation practices under Maryland law.

Md. Code Ann., Env. §§ 6-801 to 6-852 § 6-848.1 entitles consumers—including tenants who purchase paint or supplies—to see a state-developed lead-safety poster at the point of sale, which includes a phone number for lead risk reduction assistance. If a retailer is not displaying this poster as required, tenants or consumers may report the concern to the Maryland Department of the Environment. Tenants who have concerns about lead paint in their rental unit can also use the helpline number referenced in the poster or consult a local tenant-rights organization for guidance on available remedies.
