For Property Managers

Under Ind. Code § 22-9-6-6, any person who believes their rights under this chapter were violated may file a complaint directly with the Indiana Civil Rights Commission. Property owners and managers generally maintain clear records of their policies and communications to demonstrate compliance if a complaint is ever submitted. Operators familiar with the Commission's review process under IC 22-9-1-6 are better positioned to respond appropriately if a complaint is initiated.

For Tenants

Ind. Code § 22-9-6-6 gives individuals who believe their civil rights under this chapter have been violated the right to submit a complaint to the Indiana Civil Rights Commission. The Commission then reviews the complaint to determine whether action is warranted under IC 22-9-1-6, meaning the process is initiated by the individual but evaluated by the agency. Tenants who believe they have experienced a violation may also consider reaching out to a local tenant-rights organization or legal aid office to better understand the complaint process and available options.
