Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. ch. 186-2 § 186-2-.01 establishes the organizational structure of Georgia's Commission on Equal Opportunity, which administers the state's fair housing and fair employment laws. An Administrator, appointed by the Governor, holds the powers and duties set out in the Georgia Fair Housing Law of 1988 (O.C.G.A. § 8-3-200 et seq.), while a nine-member Board of Commissioners—also Governor-appointed and Senate-confirmed—oversees duties under the Fair Employment Practices Act (O.C.G.A. § 45-19-20 et seq.). The Commission is attached to the Office of the Governor for administrative purposes and serves as the designated body for receiving housing discrimination complaints in Georgia.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Under Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. ch. 186-2 § 186-2-.01, the Commission on Equal Opportunity is the state agency charged with enforcing Georgia's fair housing rules, meaning property owners and managers operate within a regulatory framework overseen by a Governor-appointed Administrator. Compliant operators generally maintain practices consistent with the Georgia Fair Housing Law of 1988 (O.C.G.A. § 8-3-200 et seq.), since the Administrator holds rulemaking and enforcement authority under that statute. Understanding that the Commission has a formal complaint intake process—located at 710 Cain Tower, Peachtree Center, Atlanta—helps operators appreciate the institutional context in which fair housing obligations are monitored.
