D.C. Code tit. 2, ch. 14 § 2-1402.51
Posting of notice.
Operative Text
(a) Except as provided in subsection (b) of this section, every person subject to this unit shall post and keep posted in a conspicuous location where business or activity is customarily conducted or negotiated, a notice whose language and form has been prepared by the Office, setting forth excerpts from or summaries of, the pertinent provisions of this unit and information pertinent to the filing of a complaint. (b) If an employer is subject to this this unit because the employer employs an individual to work in a private residence, then, in lieu of posting and keeping posted a notice in the private residence, the employer may provide the employee with a copy of the notice required pursuant to subsection (a) of this section whose language and form has been prepared by the Office, setting forth excerpts or summaries of the pertinent provisions of this act and information pertinent to the filing of a complaint.
D.C. Code § 2-1401.01 et seq. § 2-1402.51 establishes a notice-posting requirement for entities covered by the District's Human Rights Act. Covered persons must display an Office-prepared notice summarizing the law's key provisions and complaint-filing information in a prominent location where business or hiring activity takes place. A specific exception applies when the workplace is a private residence, allowing the employer to hand-deliver the notice directly to the employee instead of posting it on the premises.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Property owners and managers who employ staff or conduct rental activity covered by D.C. Code § 2-1401.01 et seq. § 2-1402.51 generally obtain the official notice prepared by the D.C. Office of Human Rights and display it where leasing or employment transactions customarily occur. When a worker is employed inside a private residence—such as a live-in caretaker or domestic worker—a compliant operator provides that individual with a personal copy of the notice rather than posting it in the home. Keeping records of notice distribution can help demonstrate ongoing compliance with this provision.

Under D.C. Code § 2-1401.01 et seq. § 2-1402.51, workers and residents have a right to receive information about the District's Human Rights Act protections, either through a posted notice at the workplace or, if the workplace is a private home, through a copy provided directly to them. If you believe this notice was never posted or provided, that may be relevant to a complaint you consider filing with the D.C. Office of Human Rights, which administers the Act. Tenant-rights organizations and legal aid offices in the District can help explain how this provision interacts with other housing and employment protections.
