Ariz. Rev. Stat. § 12-1180
When the appeal bond is filed and approved, the justice of the peace shall stay further proceedings on the judgment and immediately prepare a list of all entries on the justice's docket in the action and transmit it, together with all the original papers, to the clerk of the superior court of the county in which the trial was had.

Plain English

Under A.R.S. § 12-1171 et seq. § 12-1180, once a valid appeal bond is filed and approved in an eviction or related justice court proceeding, the justice of the peace is required to halt any further enforcement of the judgment. The justice of the peace must then compile a complete record of the case from the court's docket and forward all original documents to the superior court clerk in the same county. This provision establishes the procedural mechanism by which a case moves from the justice court level to the superior court upon appeal.

For Property Managers

Under A.R.S. § 12-1171 et seq. § 12-1180, when a tenant files and receives approval of an appeal bond, the justice court judgment is automatically stayed, meaning enforcement actions tied to that judgment are paused while the case transfers to superior court. Operators who have obtained a favorable judgment at the justice court level should be aware that an approved appeal bond triggers this stay and initiates the record-transfer process. Keeping organized records of all filings and communications related to the case can help landlords track the status of proceedings as they move to the superior court.

For Tenants

A.R.S. § 12-1171 et seq. § 12-1180 provides that a tenant who files and obtains approval of an appeal bond can halt further proceedings on a justice court judgment, giving the tenant an opportunity to have the matter reviewed by the superior court. This stay of proceedings is a procedural right built into Arizona's appeals process, and the case record is formally transferred to the superior court clerk once the bond is approved. Tenants who believe they have grounds to appeal a justice court judgment may wish to consult a tenant-rights organization or legal aid resource to understand the bond requirements and deadlines involved.
