For Property Managers

Property owners and managers operating under Watervliet, N.Y., Code ch. 175 § 175-52 generally maintain functional drainage infrastructure—such as gutters, catch basins, or stormwater connections—to prevent pooling water around buildings. Compliant operators routinely inspect fences, walkways, driveways, and parking areas for deterioration and address hazards before they create unsafe conditions. Yards are kept clear of debris, overgrown or noxious vegetation, and any junked or unregistered vehicles or equipment that would otherwise be prohibited from open storage under this section.

For Tenants

Under Watervliet, N.Y., Code ch. 175 § 175-52, tenants have an interest in open areas of their premises being maintained to the standards this provision describes—including safe walkways, proper drainage, hazard-free yards, and the absence of junked vehicles. If conditions such as standing water, broken fences, crumbling steps, or stored unregistered vehicles are present, tenants may document the issues and report them to the appropriate Watervliet code enforcement office. Tenant-rights organizations can help residents understand what remedies or complaint processes may be available when open-area conditions fall short of what § 175-52 requires.
