Watervliet, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 175 § 175-11
Position of Housing Inspector established; duties
Operative Text
A. The position of Housing Inspector in the office of the inspector of buildings is hereby created. B. The Housing Inspector shall have the duties of assisting the inspector of buildings in the performance of all acts and duties prescribed for the inspector of buildings under the provisions of this chapter, and to perform such other and further acts and duties required to be performed in the office of the inspector of buildings as may be assigned by the inspector of buildings.
Section 175-11 of Watervliet's housing code formally establishes a Housing Inspector position within the office of the inspector of buildings. This role is designed to support the inspector of buildings in carrying out all responsibilities assigned under Chapter 175, as well as any additional tasks the inspector of buildings may delegate. The provision defines the structural relationship between the two positions rather than imposing obligations on landlords or tenants directly.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Under § 175-11 of Watervliet Code ch. 175, the Housing Inspector is an authorized official who may conduct inspections and carry out enforcement activities on behalf of the inspector of buildings. Compliant property operators generally cooperate with both the inspector of buildings and any Housing Inspector acting under their authority during inspections or code-compliance reviews. Recognizing that the Housing Inspector holds delegated authority helps operators understand who may lawfully access or evaluate their properties under Chapter 175.

Section 175-11 establishes that Watervliet tenants may interact with a Housing Inspector, not just the inspector of buildings, when housing code matters arise under Chapter 175. This means complaints or inspection requests submitted to the office of the inspector of buildings may be handled or followed up on by the Housing Inspector acting in that official capacity. Tenants who believe housing conditions violate Chapter 175 can contact the office of the inspector of buildings, and tenant-rights organizations can help explain how to engage with these officials effectively.
