Schenectady, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 167 § 167-57 establishes two interrelated municipal duties. The Buildings Department must maintain a current and accurate registry of all multiple dwellings within the city. Separately, the Building Inspector is responsible for ensuring that every such dwelling undergoes a fire safety and property maintenance inspection at least once every three years, in line with New York State regulations, and must also put in place a tracking system to confirm those inspections are actually completed.

For Property Managers

Under ch. 167 § 167-57, the city's Buildings Department actively tracks all multiple dwellings and schedules mandatory fire safety and property maintenance inspections on a three-year cycle. Operators of multiple dwellings in Schenectady generally keep their properties accessible and their contact information current with the Buildings Department so that inspection scheduling can proceed without delay. Maintaining records of past inspections and any corrective actions taken is a common practice among compliant property managers operating under this framework.

For Tenants

Section 167-57 of Schenectady's Code of Ordinances gives tenants in multiple dwellings a basis for understanding that their building is supposed to receive a fire safety and property maintenance inspection at least once every three years. If a tenant believes their building has not been inspected within that timeframe or has unresolved safety concerns, they may contact the Schenectady Buildings Department to inquire about the inspection history or report a potential compliance gap. Tenant-rights organizations familiar with local housing code can also help residents understand what options are generally available when inspection requirements appear not to have been met.
