Section 167-10 of Schenectady's Code of Ordinances establishes the Building Inspector as the primary official responsible for enforcing the city's housing standards. The Inspector holds broad authority to survey neighborhoods, inspect individual properties, and issue written orders requiring property owners to correct any conditions that violate the chapter's standards. The provision covers a wide range of concerns, including deterioration, lack of facilities, poor maintenance, unsafe or unsanitary conditions, and overcrowding.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Under § 167-10, the Building Inspector has the authority to enter and inspect properties citywide, and compliant operators generally maintain their premises in a condition that meets Schenectady's housing standards at all times—not only when an inspection is scheduled. When the Inspector identifies a violation, a written remediation order will be issued, and operators typically document corrective actions taken in response to any such order. Proactive maintenance practices and familiarity with Chapter 167's standards are hallmarks of operators who consistently pass inspections.

Section 167-10 gives Schenectady's Building Inspector the duty to inspect rental properties and issue written orders when housing conditions fall below the city's standards. Tenants who observe conditions such as deterioration, inadequate facilities, or unsafe and unsanitary situations in their homes may report those concerns to the Building Inspector's office, which is empowered to conduct inspections and compel corrections. Tenant-rights organizations in the Schenectady area can help residents understand how the inspection and enforcement process under Chapter 167 works and what options may be available to them.
