Rye, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 108 § 108-20
Prohibited accumulations and storage
Operative Text
It shall be prohibited: A. To accumulate or store on residential premises, except in approved locations, any highly flammable or explosive matter, such as paints, volatile oils, cleaning fluids and similar materials, or any combustible refuse liable to spontaneous combustion, such as wastepaper, boxes, rags or similar materials. B. To accumulate or store materials on fire escapes or stairs, in stairways or passageways, at doors or windows or in any other locations where, in the event of fire, such materials may obstruct egress of occupants or interfere with firefighting operations.
Rye, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 108 § 108-20 establishes two related prohibitions for residential properties. First, it bars the storage of highly flammable or explosive substances—such as paints, volatile oils, and cleaning fluids—as well as combustible refuse prone to spontaneous ignition, except in locations that have been specifically approved for such storage. Second, it prohibits placing any materials on fire escapes, stairs, stairways, passageways, doorways, or windows where those materials could block occupants from exiting or hinder firefighting efforts during an emergency.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Operators of residential properties subject to Rye, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 108 § 108-20 generally ensure that flammable or explosive substances and combustible refuse are kept only in designated, approved storage areas—never in common corridors, stairwells, or near exits. Compliant property managers routinely inspect fire escapes, stairways, and passageways to confirm they remain clear of any stored materials that could impede evacuation or emergency response. Maintaining clear egress routes and proper storage practices is a standard part of ongoing property management under this provision.
