Exit and directional signs
Operative Text
A. Exits in multiple dwellings shall be provided with exit and directional signs, visible from the approach to the exits, except that such signs shall not be required in those portions of a building which contain dwelling units only or in which exit from sleeping rooms is directly to the outside. B. Directional signs shall be provided at locations from which the exit doorway is not readily discernible. C. Such signs shall be worded in plainly legible block letters with the word "EXIT" for exit signs and the words "TO EXIT" with a suitable pointer or arrow indicating the direction of exit, for directional signs. Letters for signs shall be conspicuous, readily discernible and at least six inches high except that for internally illuminated signs the height of such letters shall be at least 4 1/2 inches. D. Exit and directional signs shall be illuminated either externally or internally by electric lights and shall be kept illuminated at all times when the building is occupied.
Oneida, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 77 § 77-50 requires that multiple dwellings be equipped with clearly visible exit and directional signs wherever occupants need guidance to find a way out. Signs must use specific wording—'EXIT' or 'TO EXIT' with a pointer—in block letters at least six inches tall (or 4½ inches for internally illuminated signs). These signs must be lit, either externally or internally, at all times the building is occupied. Areas containing only dwelling units or where sleeping rooms open directly outside are exempt from the sign requirement.

Under ch. 77 § 77-50, compliant building operators in Oneida ensure that exit and directional signs are installed at every required location in multiple dwellings, using the prescribed wording and letter sizing. Operators maintain continuous illumination of all such signs whenever the building is occupied, whether through external or internal electric lighting. Routine inspections of sign visibility, lettering legibility, and lighting functionality are part of standard property management practice under this provision.

Section 77-50 of Oneida's Code of Ordinances gives occupants of multiple dwellings the right to properly marked and illuminated exit routes throughout common areas of their building. If exit or directional signs are missing, unlit, or illegible, tenants can document the condition and report it to the appropriate local code enforcement or housing authority in Oneida. Tenant-rights organizations can help residents understand how to raise a code-compliance concern or use a documented violation as part of a broader housing complaint.
