Section 77-123 of Oneida's Code of Ordinances establishes safety requirements for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) systems in buildings. The rule prohibits conveying undiluted LPG in liquid form through building piping, bans open-flame or open-coil vaporization devices, and requires that multi-container setups allow container swaps without interrupting gas flow. Systems must include pressure-relief safety devices, at least one exterior shutoff accessible in good working order, and must be installed and maintained in accordance with the City's Fire Prevention Code.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Property owners and managers overseeing buildings with LPG systems under § 77-123 generally ensure that all piping, containers, and vaporization equipment conform to the specific prohibitions and design standards set out in the ordinance. Compliant operators typically verify that containers are sited and stored to avoid hazards to neighboring properties, that pressure-relief devices discharge safely, and that the required exterior shutoff valve is accessible and kept in good operating condition. Routine inspections aligned with the City of Oneida's Fire Prevention Code help demonstrate ongoing compliance with § 77-123.

Tenants living in units served by liquefied petroleum gas systems have an interest in knowing that § 77-123 requires those systems to meet specific safety standards, including a functioning exterior shutoff and pressure-relief devices. If a tenant observes what appears to be a non-compliant or unsafe LPG installation—such as a missing or inoperable shutoff valve—they may consider reporting the concern to the City of Oneida's code enforcement or fire prevention office. Tenant-rights organizations familiar with local housing codes can help residents of Oneida understand what remedies or complaint processes may be available under § 77-123.
