For Property Managers

Property owners and managers who work with real estate brokers or listing services in Johnstown should be aware that § 150-6 extends fair-housing obligations beyond individual transactions to the brokerage and organizational level. Compliant operators generally ensure that any broker or agent they engage does not restrict access to multiple-listing services or professional organizations on the basis of protected characteristics such as race, familial status, or national origin. Maintaining documented, consistent practices around broker selection and service engagement supports compliance with this provision.

For Tenants

Under § 150-6 of Johnstown's Code of Ordinances ch. 150, renters and prospective renters have the right to equal access to real estate brokerage services and related organizations without discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin. If a person believes they have been denied access to or treated unequally within a brokerage service or listing organization on a protected basis, general enforcement paths include filing a complaint with a local or state fair-housing agency or consulting a tenant-rights organization familiar with New York fair-housing law. Keeping records of interactions with brokers and related services can be useful when pursuing any of these avenues.
