Operative Text
A. The fire-resistance rating of floors, walls, ceilings and other elements and components shall be maintained at the level required by the building code in effect at the time of the construction or most recent change of occupancy of said building. B. All required fire-rated doors or smoke barriers shall be maintained in good working order, including all hardware necessary for the proper operation thereof. The use of door stops, wedges and other unapproved hold-open devices is prohibited.
Section 475-27 of Fulton, N.Y.'s Code of Ordinances requires that the fire-resistance ratings of floors, walls, ceilings, and similar structural elements be kept at the level mandated by the building code that was in force when the building was constructed or last changed in occupancy. Additionally, all fire-rated doors and smoke barriers must be kept in good working order, complete with functioning hardware. The provision explicitly prohibits the use of door stops, wedges, or any other unapproved devices that hold these doors or barriers open.

Under § 475-27, property owners and managers are generally expected to conduct regular inspections to confirm that fire-resistance ratings on floors, walls, and ceilings remain intact and have not been compromised by renovations, repairs, or wear. Compliant operators also ensure that all fire-rated doors and smoke barriers—along with their hinges, latches, closers, and other hardware—are fully functional. Removing or prohibiting the use of door stops, wedges, and similar unapproved hold-open devices is a standard part of maintaining compliance with this section.
