Section 215-17 of the Cohoes Code of Ordinances establishes requirements for exits in residential buildings. All buildings must have safe, continuous, and unobstructed pathways from the interior to the exterior at street or grade level, arranged so occupants can escape in an emergency. One- and two-family dwellings must have both a primary exit and a secondary exit or emergency exit opening, while multiple dwellings must have approved exits meeting applicable standards.

Under § 215-17, compliant operators of residential properties in Cohoes maintain all exit pathways in a clear, unobstructed condition at all times and ensure exits lead continuously from the building interior to street or grade level. Owners of one- and two-family dwellings generally provide both a primary exit and a secondary exit or qualifying emergency exit opening. Operators of multiple dwellings ensure that all exits carry the required approvals and are arranged so that occupants can evacuate safely in an emergency.
