Owners must submit a written renewal application within the 60-day window before the registration expires. In exceptional circumstances, the Commissioner may extend a registration beyond the standard one-year term for sufficient cause.

Buffalo, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 264 § 264-17 sets a firm one-year term for rental dwelling unit registrations, so compliant operators track each registration's expiration date and submit a written renewal application during the 60-day period before it lapses. Maintaining a calendar reminder well in advance of that window helps ensure the application is filed on time. If unusual circumstances arise that may prevent timely renewal, operators are generally aware that the Commissioner holds discretionary authority to extend a registration for sufficient cause.

Tenants can check whether their unit's registration is active, and an expired or revoked registration may be relevant in housing-related proceedings.
