Albany, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 231 § 231-67 establishes structural and functional standards for chimneys, flues, and gas vents in residential and other buildings. These components must be built and kept in a condition that is structurally sound, smoketight, noncombustible, and capable of safely carrying combustion byproducts to the outside air. The provision also prohibits fuel-burning equipment or fireplaces in separate tenancies from sharing a single flue, and requires that smoke pipes and gas vents be securely fastened so they cannot fall from the flue.

Property owners and managers subject to Albany, N.Y., Code of Ordinances ch. 231 § 231-67 generally keep chimneys, flues, and gas vents in a condition that is structurally sound, smoketight, and free from cracks, corrosion, or spalling. Compliant operators ensure that prefabricated chimneys are installed in accordance with Albany Building Department requirements, that flue linings can withstand operating temperatures, and that smoke pipes and gas vents are securely supported. Operators also verify that fuel-burning equipment and fireplaces serving different tenancies are never connected to the same flue, as the provision expressly prohibits shared flues across separate units.
