Lincoln, Neb., Mun. Code ch. 21.05 § 21.05.230
Section 201.3 Amended; Terms Defined in Other Codes
Operative Text
Section 201.3 of the International Property Maintenance Code is amended to read as follows: 201.3 Terms defined in other codes . Where terms are not defined in this code and are defined in the International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Fire Code, Uniform Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code, National Electrical Code, or the International Fuel Gas Code, such terms shall have the meanings ascribed to them as stated in those codes, as adopted by the City of Lincoln, Nebraska. (Ord. 19349 §23; March 1, 2009).
Lincoln, Neb., Mun. Code ch. 21.05 § 21.05.230 establishes how technical terms are handled when the International Property Maintenance Code does not itself supply a definition. Under this rule, words that appear in related model codes—such as building, residential, fire, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, or fuel gas codes—carry the same meaning those other codes assign, provided Lincoln has formally adopted those codes. The provision ensures consistent interpretation across the interconnected set of codes that govern property conditions in the city.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Property owners and managers operating under Lincoln's property maintenance standards should be aware that § 21.05.230 extends the definitional framework beyond the maintenance code itself. When a term used in an inspection, notice, or enforcement action is not defined in the maintenance code, its meaning is drawn from whichever related code Lincoln has adopted that does define it. Compliant operators generally familiarize themselves with the full suite of adopted codes so that technical terms in citations or compliance orders are understood in their proper context.

Section § 21.05.230 affects how the rules that govern your rental unit are interpreted, particularly when a term in a housing or property maintenance matter lacks a definition in the maintenance code itself. Knowing that definitions can come from several interconnected codes—building, electrical, plumbing, and others—can be relevant when reviewing a notice of violation or discussing conditions with a housing inspector. Tenants who believe a term has been misapplied may find it useful to contact a local tenant-rights organization or consult the Lincoln city code directly to verify which adopted code supplies the controlling definition.
