Under § 22-501, compliant rental property owners in Skokie register every residential rental unit they own and operate with the Village before any tenant occupancy begins. Operators generally maintain current registrations for each unit and track whether any of their properties qualify for the condominium exemption under the Illinois Condominium Act. Keeping registration records up to date for all non-exempt units is a standard practice for operators seeking to remain in compliance with Ch. 22 Art. XIV.

Section 22-501 establishes that a residential rental unit in Skokie must be registered with the Village before a landlord may lawfully place tenants in it, which means tenants may have grounds to raise an unregistered unit as a relevant issue in a housing dispute. Tenants who believe their unit may be unregistered can contact the Village of Skokie directly to verify a unit's registration status. Tenant-rights organizations familiar with Skokie's municipal code can help explain what options may be available when a unit does not appear to comply with the registration requirement of § 22-501.
