Hanover Park — Ch. 82 Rental Residential Housing Code § 82-14
Other violations
Operative Text
The following shall constitute violations of this chapter: (1) Failure of the occupants of the rental residential property to vacate such property within 45 days after receiving notice from the code official that such property is not properly licensed or that the license has been revoked unless the rental was of a shorter period than 45 days or a short term rental prohibited by this chapter, in which case the occupant shall vacate within ten days or immediately if a prohibited short term rental. (2) Any person other than an inspector from the department of community development who removes or defaces any notices which have been posted pursuant to this chapter without the approval of the code official shall be liable for the penalties provided for by this chapter. (3) It shall be unlawful for any person to consume an alcoholic beverage or possess alcoholic liquor except in the original container with the seal unbroken on the common area of a multiple-unit building, including all yards outside of a rental residential dwelling, except in areas designated by the owner of the rental residential dwelling, having advised the Police Department in writing. These regulations shall not be effective until the owner of the rental residential building posts signs providing reasonable notice of these regulations to persons entering the property.
Hanover Park Ch. 82 § 82-14 establishes several distinct violations within the rental housing code. Occupants must leave an unlicensed or license-revoked property within 45 days of official notice, or within 10 days (or immediately) if the rental was short-term or prohibited. Additionally, unauthorized removal or defacement of posted code notices is a punishable offense, and consuming or possessing open alcoholic beverages in common areas or shared yards of multi-unit buildings is unlawful unless the property owner has designated those areas and notified the Police Department in writing with proper signage posted.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Operators of rental residential properties in Hanover Park should be aware that § 82-14 places affirmative obligations on them alongside tenant-facing rules. A compliant property owner ensures that any code-official notices remain intact and undisturbed, and if they wish to permit alcohol consumption in common areas or yards, they formally advise the Police Department in writing and post clear signage before those permissions take effect. Owners also generally track licensing status carefully, since a lapse or revocation triggers the 45-day vacate timeline for occupants.

Under Hanover Park Ch. 82 § 82-14, tenants have a defined window—typically 45 days from receiving official notice—to vacate a property whose license has lapsed or been revoked, with shorter timelines applying to short-term or prohibited rentals. Tenants should be aware that removing or defacing any notices posted by the code official can itself constitute a violation carrying penalties under this chapter. Those with questions about their rights or the validity of a notice may contact the Hanover Park Department of Community Development or reach out to a local tenant-rights organization for general guidance.
