For Property Managers

Evanston, Ill., City Code § 5 § 5-8-4 requires building owners to file their annual registration renewal and pay the applicable fee to the Department by December 31st of each year. Compliant operators ensure the registration statement is accurate and certified, retain the issued certificate of registration as proof of compliance, and check the current fee schedule set by the City Manager before filing. Owners of two-unit buildings who are 65 or older, reside in one unit, and qualify for the Illinois Circuit Breaker program should include proof of that qualification with their application to receive the 50% fee reduction.

For Tenants

Evanston, Ill., City Code § 5 § 5-8-4 establishes that building owners must maintain current, certified registration with the City and hold a valid certificate of registration issued by the Director. Tenants can ask to see whether their building's registration is current, as a lapsed registration may be relevant in housing-related proceedings. Those who believe their landlord is out of compliance may consider contacting the Evanston Department that administers this Chapter or reaching out to a local tenant-rights organization for general guidance on available options.
