Section 22-268 of Edwardsville's Code establishes a fee schedule for the city's residential rental registration and inspection program, which is designed to be financially self-sustaining. Annual fees vary by property type: $40 per building for single-family homes and mobile homes, $60 per building for duplexes, and $25 per unit for multi-family properties with three or more units. Registrations and payments received on or after February 1 incur an additional $75 late fee per unit, and any reinspection beyond the first carries a $75 charge.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Under § 22-268, compliant rental property operators in Edwardsville register each property and remit the applicable annual fee before February 1 to avoid the $75-per-unit late charge. Operators of multi-family buildings with three or more units calculate fees on a per-unit basis at $25 each, while single-family and duplex owners pay a flat per-building rate. Keeping records of payment submission dates and maintaining properties so that first reinspections (which are free) resolve any issues helps operators avoid the $75 subsequent reinspection fee.

Section 22-268 establishes that Edwardsville's rental registration program is funded through landlord-paid fees, meaning landlords bear the cost of registering and having their properties inspected. Tenants can use this framework to verify whether their rental property is properly registered with the city, as an unregistered property may indicate a compliance issue under Ch. 22 Art. VIII. Tenants who have concerns about whether their landlord has met registration obligations may contact the city directly or reach out to a local tenant-rights organization for general guidance on available options.
