Bridgeport, Conn., Mun. Code §§ 15.12, 15.28 § 15.12.270
Rooming houses and hotels—License requirements (Bridgeport Housing Code)
Operative Text
No person shall, subsequent to the effective date of the ordinance codified in this chapter, operate a rooming house, class I, rooming house, class II, or hotel, as defined in this chapter, within the city unless a rooming house, class I, rooming house, class II, or hotel license shall be issued to him as provided in this chapter. Applications for such licenses shall be made in writing to the housing code enforcement officer upon such forms as may be prescribed by him. Such application, whether original or for renewal of a license already issued, shall contain in addition to such other information as may be required by the housing code enforcement officer, the applicant's name, address, the address at which he proposes to operate a rooming house, class I, a rooming house, class II, or a hotel, the number of rooms, roomers and beds to be for hire or not for hire, the number of beds and roomers in each room, and the name of the individual or individuals who will be charged with the control, management and maintenance of said rooming house, class I, rooming house, class II, or hotel. Application for the renewal of a license already issued shall be made to the housing code enforcement officer not later than one month prior to the date of expiration of the existing license.
Section 15.12.270 of the Bridgeport Municipal Code establishes that rooming houses (Class I and Class II) and hotels operating within the city must hold a valid license issued by the housing code enforcement officer. The rule requires that license applications—whether new or renewal—be submitted in writing and include specific details such as the property address, number of rooms, beds, roomers, and the names of those responsible for managing the property. Renewal applications must be submitted no later than one month before the current license expires.
Plain English — not legal advice.
Under Bridgeport Mun. Code § 15.12.270, operators of rooming houses or hotels are expected to obtain and maintain a current license from the housing code enforcement officer before operating. Compliant operators typically keep their application information up to date—including room counts, bed counts, and the names of management personnel—and submit renewal paperwork at least one month ahead of the license expiration date. Maintaining accurate records of these details helps ensure that the licensing process proceeds without interruption.

Section 15.12.270 of the Bridgeport Municipal Code means that any rooming house or hotel where you reside should be operating under a valid city-issued license. If you have reason to believe your rooming house or hotel is operating without the required license, you may contact the Bridgeport housing code enforcement officer to inquire about the property's licensing status. Tenant-rights organizations in Connecticut can also help explain what options may be available when a landlord is found to be operating without proper licensure.
